Festival to showcase the best of city's food

RESTAURATEURS, fishmongers, chefs, butchers and gardeners are set to take part in Sheffield's first ever food festival, to run in the first week of June.

Producers and cooks will be joining forces to showcase the talent in the city's food industry.

Coun Paul Scriven, leader of Sheffield Council, said: "We literally have something for everyone's taste. Not only will this tempt the tastebuds, it will be a true celebration of the best that Sheffield has to offer in local food and drink.

"It will also show us all how to make sure we don't clock up too many food miles and how easy it is to grow your own wonderful food and eat more healthily."

During the Sheffield Food Festival venues including Barkers Pool, the Peace Gardents, the Winter Garden, Devonshire Green and Tudor Square will come alive with markets, celebrity chef cooking demonstrations, street parties and grow-your-own activities.

One of the festival highlights is a cooking and music event at 5pm on Wednesday, June 2, featuring celebrity chef Levi Roots.

Phil Jones, director of Edge Street Events, which has been commissioned by Sheffield Council to organise the food festival, said: "The festival will be a fantastic event to get everyone in Sheffield excited about food and the great range of local produce available, as well as building an understanding of healthy eating."

One of those set to take part in the Sheffield Food Festival is ice cream producer Eddie Andrew, from Dungworth. The 30-year-old has been making ice cream for three years under the brand name "Our Cow Molly."

Mr Andrew said: "There are so many great food producers who operate in our city, and because you don't find a lot of their produce on supermarket shelves, not everyone knows what is available to them."
