Festival with something to crow about

Michelle Gardner, aged four, from Leeds, was as happy as a pig in mud as she sheltered from the rain at the Ripley Scarecrow Festival.

The annual event, which continues this weekend, draws hundreds of visitors to the historic village, north of Harrogate.

A pig-themed scarecrow trail is among the attractions.

Festival organisers are hoping to win a place in the record books by creating the world’s largest knitted patchwork pig.
