Fewer trains run to time on Yorkshire-London route

TRAIN punctuality increased last month, but the nationalised Yorkshire to London operator East Coast failed to meet the mark, it was revealed today.

A total of 93.6% of trains ran on time in May 2010 compared with 93.4% in May last year, Network Rail said.

But East Coast failed to achieve a punctuality figure of 90%, with 88.8% of its trains running on time.

Services were affected by two deaths, two cable thefts and a broken-down train.

Network Rail's operations and customer services director Robin Gisby said: "Passengers across the network are reaping the real benefits of a high-performing, punctual railway - the aspect of the rail service that passengers rate as the single most important.

"We are far from complacent, and we and train operators will continue to work tirelessly to boost train punctuality to even higher levels."
