‘Filthy’ pizza takeaway fined £3,000

THE boss of a “filthy” pizza takeaway has been fined £3,000 and ordered to pay £615 costs after admitting seven breaches of food hygiene regulations.

Soran Omar Tawfik voluntarily closed A&N Pizza Fiesta, at 223 Beverley Road, Hull, after environmental health officers discovered some of the worst conditions they had ever encountered during a routine inspection.

The breaches included: mouse droppings found in food preparation areas; failure to keep equipment and premises clean; food handlers not adequately trained; and inadequate pest control measures.

The business scored just five out of 100 in the council’s Scores on the Doors scheme, a rating the authority described as “very poor”.

Coun John Hewitt, portfolio holder for CitySafe, said: “Environmental health officers in Hull check over 2,500 food premises and the conditions at A&N Pizza Fiesta were among the worst found.

“Whilst we are happy to advise and support operators, conditions like this pose such a serious risk to public health that we had no option but to instigate criminal proceedings.”
