Final voting under way for Local Heroes

THe final voting has started for this year’s Local Hero awards – celebrating those who have gone the extra mile to help others.

The two nominees in this year’s awards, run by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, are 19-year-old Danny Squires of East Hull and 55-year-old Cleethorpes taxi driver David Gaunt.

The teenager was walking past a house in Hull last November when he heard a smoke alarm activate.

Realising someone could be in danger, he broke the glass in the front door to get in, put out the fire and carried the young woman who lived in the house downstairs and out of the front door, where he was met by firefighters.

Mr Gaunt was driving in Grimsby last December when he saw the car in front lose control, hit a lamppost and roll over several times before coming to a halt.

Mr Gaunt dragged the man out, minutes before the car exploded. When fire crews arrived it was a fireball. The driver, from Leeds, suffered minor injuries.

Partnerships Officer Katrina Horth said: “The awards are an excellent way to recognise people, both within the service, our partner organisations and members of the public, who go above and beyond what could be expected to help others.

“Both Danny and David carried out brave rescues, putting the safety of others first.”

The pair have been invited to attend an awards ceremony on Thursday September 29 at the Country Park Inn in Hessle where the winner will be announced along with the winners of 12 other awards in various categories.
