Finan and Winstanley shock the Academy

CASTLEFORD sprang a major shock by sentencing runaway leaders Yorkshire Academy to their first defeat since May 17 and only their second of the season, at Savile Park.

Opening batsman Charles Finan was the hero with an innings of 82 containing nine fours and a six in the five-wicket success. The Academy were restricted to 159-8 in their 55 overs, with Andrew Winstanley taking 3-21 in five overs.

Second-placed Barnsley had no game but champions York lost by three wickets at Driffield in a thriller. York’s 330-5 included 140 from Liam McKendry, who smashed seven fours and seven sixes and shared a fourth-wicket stand of 146 with Nick Kay who made 79.

Driffield’s Sam Drury rose magnificently to the challenge with an undefeated 174 containing 12 fours and 10 sixes, he and Ali Asad (84) adding 210 for the third wicket. Town reached their target with three balls left

Harrogate opener Alexis Twigg included 10 boundaries in a fine 107 and George Ross hit 81 in a 111 runs home win over Scarborough. The pair added 120 for the third wicket and Scarborough captain Andy Simpson took 6-39 in 11 overs.

Sheffield Collegiate had a 113 runs victory against Doncaster. Henry Eldred made a half-century before being run out in Collegiate’s 227. Matthew Dixon then took 4-31 in 11.3 overs and Matt Lee (2-9) in six as Town were dismissed for 114.

Sheffield United lost to visitors Cleethorpes by 136 runs. Half-centuries from Bill Kirby and Ian Mansfield were highlights for Cleethorpes who totalled 237-8. Seamers Alex Osmond and Alex Willerton took three wickets each as United were ousted for 101 in 23.1 overs.
