Fine for ‘unsafe’ whitening tooth kit

THREE companies have been ordered to pay more than £10,000 in fines and costs after a customer complained about a teeth whitening kit staining her clothes.

On investigation it turned out that the ‘professional home kit’ - supplied by a dentist - contained 10 per cent hydrogen peroxide - almost 100 times more than regulations allowed.

The three defendants, pleaded guilty to an offence under the Cosmetic Products (Safety) Regulations 2008.

The importing company, Wyten Technology Limited was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay £2,500 in costs and a £15 victim surcharge and the distributor, Billericay Dental Supply Company Limited was fined £1,500, costs of £2,500 and a £15 victim surcharge, at a hearing at Hull Magistrates earlier this year. The court also ordered the destruction of the stock.

Dentist Kasbin Ltd trading as My Dental Health Club, of Freetown Way, Hull, was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £1,795 in costs.
