They used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel, a thermal imaging camera, a short extension ladder and small tools during the response.

The fire caused damage to part of the pub itself and to the roof of an adjoining single storey building.

A North Yorkshire Fire Service spokeswoman said a man was treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics at the scene.

She said the cause of the fire was believed to be accidental.

The fire service left the scene shortly before 3.30pm but a crew from Richmond were due to return this evening to carry out further checks.
