AT least half a dozen motorists had to be rescued from their vehicles in the space of an hour after getting stuck in floodwater this afternoon, as high winds and rain battered parts of Yorkshire.

Occupants of two cars had to be helped out by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service after getting stuck in floodwater on Hawes Road, Appersett, while another needed help on the A684, Aysgarth.

Emergency services also lent a hand when a woman drove into floodwater at Tarn Moor Bridge, in Embsay, near Skipton.

Within 20 minutes, the woman and her dog had been taken to the safety of a police car while the fire brigade got her vehicle out of the water.

Motorists were also caught out at Keasden, Settle and Carleton, Skipton.

The River Ouse at Naburn, near York, was one of two locations where the Environment Agency maintained flood warnings in Yorkshire tonight.

They said river levels were expected to continue to rise in York overnight, exceeding 3.4m, or 11 feet 2 inches by tomorrow.

Flood warnings were also issued on the Roecliffe Caravan Park on the River Ure.

The Met Office said while winds would ease, further rain, which will again be most persistent over western areas, could cause surface flooding. It said: “Rivers are likely to rise in response to this rainfall and localised flooding is possible in the rain area as well as downstream in rivers flowing eastwards away from the Yorkshire Dales.”

Even after the rain subsides, the risk of localised flooding would remain as the bodies of water make their way through the river systems.
