Firefighters given the bird

Firefighters have been forced out of a training tower at their Castleford station because a blackbird is nesting there.

Instead, crews, Steve Clough, Aaron Clark, Claire Poppleton and Dave Kemp, are having to travel to neighbouring stations to allow the bird to raise its young undisturbed. The birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Temporary green watch manager, Paul Graham, said: "When the blackbird arrived we checked the law and we can't do anything to disturb it while it is nesting. This means we can't use the tower until the bird has gone and it could be many weeks."
