Firefighters stage exercise at country attraction

Firefighters staged a dramatic fire exercise at a country house near Doncaster yesterday to test their procedures for dealing with a major emergency.

Crews were faced with a scenario in which a fire was developing in the roof of English Heritage-owned Brodsworth Hall. Smoke generators were used to provide artificial smoke.

The purpose of the exercise was to test a new water supply which has recently been installed on site, and to test how a salvage operation might work for exhibits at the attraction.

Fire chiefs called the operation Exercise Dolphin and brought in around 30 firefighters from stations surrounding the hall including those in Adwick, Edlington, Thorne, Dearne and South Elmsall.

Station manager Steve Adams said: "On arrival the crews were faced with a difficult scenario. They had to work alongside the staff at the hall to retrieve all valuable artefacts and to bring the exercise to a successful conclusion.

"This exercise forms part of our ongoing aim to continually improve our major emergency response procedures."
