Firefighters tackle huge chemical blaze in Huddersfield (with video)

A HUGE blaze at a chemical works in Huddersfield was brought under control today after more than 120 firefighters spent the night tackling the flames.

People living in parts of the town have been warned to stay indoors and contact medical services if they are feeling unwell following the fire in the Linthwaite area.

The A62 was closed both ways between John Haigh Road and Hoyle House Fold in Slaithwaite, causing major rush hour delays.

Around 15 schools in the area were closed this morning but most are understood to have reopened.

West Yorkshire Fire Service said more than 30 appliances from across the region were called to deal with the blaze at Grosvenor Chemicals.

A spokeswoman said crews were called to the plant at 1.05am.

This morning, she said the fire had been contained in a storage section containing pesticides and glue-based products.

"Foam has been used to prevent the spread of fire and the fire is now under control due to the hard work of firefighters and an effective multi-agency response," she said.

"As a precaution, members of the public in the south Huddersfield area are advised to stay indoors.

"Anyone with concerns should contact their GP or NHS Direct.

"Or, if you develop respiratory problems, please call an ambulance."

She said the cause of the blaze has not yet been established.
