Firefighters tackle large blaze at West Yorkshire primary school UPDATED

Fire investigators are today at the scene of last night's blaze at a primary school in Castleford.

Eight fire engines were sent to deal with the fire at Airedale Junior School, in Fryston Road, after being called out at at around 7.15pm yesterday (Thurs July 15).

The last fire engine left the scene just before 10.30am this morning.

Fire investigators are currently at the school trying to establish the cause of the blaze.

The school tweeted on Thursday night: “Airedale Junior School will be closed until further notice due to fire. We will keep you informed.”

The blaze was in the roof of the school building.

Schools, community organisations and individuals tweeted the school, which is due to break up for the summer holidays next week, with messages of support.

Airedale Academy said: “Our thoughts are with the staff and students @AiredaleJuniors. We hope you get up and running once again really soon.”

St Micheal’s CE Academy said: “We’re also sending our thoughts and best wishes to @AiredaleJuniors this morning while they deal with fire damage. We are glad everybody is safe.”
