Firefighters tackle moorland blazes

FIREFIGHTERS fought a spate of moor fires over the weekend.

Warm and windy weather fanned the fires. In the most serious, dozens of firefighters and the coastguard battled overnight to contain a 1,000 square yard area of fire across a cliff in Ravenscar, near Scarborough. Crews from Richmond, Reeth, Leyburn and Colburn put out a large-scale fire on moorland near Arkengarthdale on Saturday afternoon.

Crews were called to the Ravenscar blaze at 4.45pm on Saturday but were still battling it yesterday morning.

A North Yorkshire Fire Service spokesman said: "There was a 1000sqm area of grass and gorse on fire and due to it being unsafe to fight the fire on the cliff the coastguard were called upon.

"It flared up again on Sunday morning but we managed to break it up into two separate areas before containing it."

Nobody was injured.
