Firemen rescue Scarborough woman, 83, stuck in deckchair for six hours

AN ELDERLY woman had to be rescued by firefighters after she was left stuck in a deckchair for six hours when the fabric ripped.

A fire crew heard the 83-year-old woman calling out for help from her second-floor balcony as they were passing her home in Northway in the centre of Scarborough at about 1.50pm today.

The pensioner’s bottom had become lodged in the deckchair when the fabric seat had ripped at about 8am, leaving her unable to get out as her legs were stuck up in the air.

The firefighters gained access to the woman’s balcony via her neighbour’s property, climbing over before managing to free her from the deckchair.

A North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “This was an unusual incident, but firefighters are trained for every eventuality.”

Paramedics from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service were also called just before 2pm and treated the pensioner at the scene.

She was then taken to Scarborough District Hospital for further treatment as a precautionary measure.
