Firework finale as revamped park marks its 127th year

SEVEN bands will provide the musical backdrop to an event celebrating the renovation of a Victorian park.

The Celebrate Greenhead Park event, taking place next Sunday, will mark the Huddersfield park’s official re-opening and is also timed to coincide with its 127th birthday.

The free event includes a host of family entertainment, as well as a firework display at dusk by the lakeside. The newly restored bandstand will play host to the Bandstand Marathon, where seven bands will perform, including Sellers International Youth Band, Phoenix New Orleans Parade and ska band Wobbly Bob.

A special Birthday Banquet will be taking place in the park’s lower field, where families are encouraged to bring picnics and enjoy an afternoon of shows and performances from street theatre artists including strongwoman Betty Brawn, and Bernie Bennett, who performs tricks on a tight rope.

Street theatre shows and performers, including Superhero Bernie Bennett, will be found across the rest of the park, as well as balloon modellers and other entertainers.

And in keeping with the park’s heritage, Victorian games will take place by the War Memorial.The event begins at 1pm. Further information is available at www.kirklees.gov.uk/greenheadpark
