Firm cleared over water pollution

A CONTRACTOR has denied it is behind a pollution leak that has left a 330-yard stretch of Mere Beck in Scarborough “devoid of life.”

Sirius Remediation Ltd, which is currently working on a site on Queen Margaret’s Industrial Estate, have not been found responsible for the leak, which left the stretch of water without any wildlife. A statement said: “From the investigations carried out to date Sirius is satisfied that the incident has not been caused as a direct result of its operations on the site.”

Scarborough Borough Council, the Environment Agency and Yorkshire Water have now turned their investigation to a network of historic drainage systems passing through and beneath the site.

Protective booms were placed along the watercourse to prevent the pollution, which poses no direct threat to the public, spreading.

The investigation was launched after residents complained of a stench emanating from the beck.

Officials inspecting the site last week discovered dead snails, but worms, fresh water scrimps and mayfly larvae would also normally be found there.
