Firm wins 25-year roads contract

COUNCIL bosses in Sheffield yesterday announced that the firm Amey has been chosen to transform the city’s highway network over the next 25 years.

The £2bn highways project is set to get under way this summer.

Over the next five years, every road, pavement and streetlight in Sheffield will be brought up to standard. Amey will then maintain those roads over the remaining 20 years of the contract.

“This will consign to history the pothole reputation that Sheffield has had”, council chief executive John Mothersole said yesterday.

He added: “This is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to refurbish the roads, pavements and streetscene across the whole city.”

Meanwhile, a milestone has also been reached in the development of the Finningley and Rossington regeneration route scheme in Doncaster, with the submission of a planning application.

Work on the link road, which will connect the M18 motorway with the new inland port and Robin Hood Airport, could start this summer and finish by 2014, subject to planning permission being granted.
