Firms to throw open doors for city Heritage Open Days

THE public will be able to discover more about the businesses which have made Hull prosper when they throw open their doors as part of Heritage Open Days next month.

There will be guided tours of Crown Paints, which is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, Fenner, which can boast a 150-year history in the city and Associated British Ports, which will be putting on free bus tours around the docks.

People will be able to see how the docks have developed to become the UK’s top softwood importer, along with the berths of the superferries as well as the site earmarked for the Siemens wind turbine factory.

There will also be a limited guided tour on September 9 of Odlings Ltd, one of the country’s largest manufacturers and importers of monumental memorials, including a look at the factory, art studio and masonry workshop which are not normally open to the public.

As part of the build up to Open Days, which take place from September 8 to 11, Christopher Oughtred, great-great-grandson of company founder William Jackson, will be sharing the secrets of the company’s success – as well as the difficulties encountered in surviving through six generations. Nationally only 11 per cent of family businesses reach the third generation. The talk will take place at William Jackson’s headquarters in Hessle on September 1.

Organisers they are confident this year’s programme of buildings, tours and talks will be the most ambitious yet.
