First Direct has been named Best Banking Brand in the Which? Awards 2014.

Which? said the awards “publicly recognise and celebrate the very best businesses in the UK that consistently get it right for consumers”.

There were two new financial categories at this year’s awards. The first to recognise the Best Banking Brand was awarded to Leeds-based First Direct with NFU Mutual the winner of Best Insurance Services Provider.

Tracy Garrad, head of First Direct, said: “It’s fantastic to be awarded the Best Banking Brand, especially when we don’t have a presence on the high street.

“With new entrants regularly emerging and trust in the system pretty low, you need to build a strong brand to give customers confidence to trust that they’ve made the right choice.

“We’re celebrating our 25th anniversary this year and I’m so very proud to see that our brand is going from strength to strength.’

Waitrose was named Best Supermarket for performing consistently highly for its in-store and online offerings.

John Lewis, for the second year running, won the Best Retailer award.

Samsung was awarded the Best Audio-Visual Brand for delivering quality and good value consistently across all its products. Newcomer Giffgaff won the Best Telecom Services Provider for offering excellent value for money.
