First glimpse of superstore set to transform town centre

AN ARTIST’S impression has been released of the new superstore which is set to bring about a multi-million pound overhaul of Rotherham town centre.

Developer TCN Property Projects last week revealed plans to close Rotherham’s current Tesco store in Market Street and replace it with a new Tesco Extra store on the site of the council offices and Central Library. The library and offices are already set to move to a new civic centre on the Guest and Chrimes site.

A Grade Two-listed clock which sits at the current civic centre complex, would be moved to Effingham Square.

All staff from the current Tesco store would be given a job at the new branch, while a further 200 jobs would also be created.

Stephen Holme from TCN Property Projects said: “We are delighted to be able to announce these plans that will bring a significant investment in Rotherham town centre.

“I have worked in the Rotherham area for a number of years and it is very exciting to bring forward proposals that will provide jobs and the potential for a multi million pound investment in the local road network.”

If Tesco gets the go-ahead, the developer will make a “multi-million pound investment” in Rotherham’s road network, including removing the Centenary Way flyover, upgrading pedestrian crossings and improving access to the bus terminal.
