First road camera patrols detailed

POLICE have revealed the first locations to be patrolled by officers using mobile safety cameras to target speeding drivers and motorcyclists on some of North Yorkshire’s most notorious stretches of road.

Officers will be deployed in a van equipped with the technology from today in the latest attempt to prevent motorists and bikers flouting the speed limits across the county. North Yorkshire had up until now been the only area in the country which had not adopted the use of either mobile of fixed-site cameras.

Some of the worst accident blackspots have been included in the first wave of patrols, including the A64 between York and Scarborough, the B1257 from Helmsley to Stokesley and the stretch of the A169 from Pickering to Whitby. The van will also patrol the A1237 outer ring road at York, along with Huntington Road, Millfield Lane, Strensall Road and Stockton Lane in the city.

While the mobile cameras will target anyone speeding, police confirmed there will be a “particular emphasis” on rogue motorcyclists. Despite a series of enforcement campaigns, 20 bikers died on the county’s roads during last year.
