Fish found at Driffield may be from Russia
A fish believed to have spawned in the rivers of Russia, Finland or Norway has been caught at a beck in East Yorkshire.
The Environment Agency verified a report of a Pacific pink salmon at Driffield Beck and said the species had been hooked in unusually high numbers in the North East. It believes the species’ presence may be due to recently established self-sustaining populations in Russia, Finland and Norway and that it may threaten the natural balance of UK rivers.
Jon Shelley, the agency’s fisheries programme manager, said: “We’re continuing to monitor the situation and will do practical tests if specimens are recovered.”
The fish should not be put back into the water and sightings should be reported to the Agency by calling 0800 80 70 60.
