Fish stall has reel staying power

It HAS been selling fresh fish to the people of Leeds from a stall in the city’s Kirkgate Market for a century.

And to mark Bethell fish stall’s 100 years of trading, customers and other market traders presented stallholders John and Liz Laughton with gifts to mark the milestone.

The family business was started by Mrs Laughton’s great uncle Richard Bethell and four generations of the family have since been involved. “The market is a special place,” Mrs Laughton said.

“It is the customers and traders who make it so special.”

She is also doing her very best to try and make sure that the wet fish trade traditions are being maintained.

To this end, she has ensured that all four of her sons can fillet fish, after being taught when they were aged only 12.
