A fitting tribute

AS Leeds, Yorkshire and the whole of Great Britain pay their solemn tributes and bid their fond farewells to Sir Jimmy Savile in a public display of genuine affection, it is fitting indeed to learn that a new institute is now to be set up in a local hospital in his memory.

Among his many charity works and donations, of course, Sir Jimmy was a hugely generous benefactor towards the NHS in Leeds, offering both money and his own time and labour – and so it was absolutely typical of the man to have bequeathed a considerable sum in his will to support heart treatment at Leeds General Infirmary.

The events of recent days would suggest that almost everybody has their own unique memories of Sir Jimmy Savile. But for all his pioneering work as a DJ; for all his TV stardom and his outlandish interviews and attire, it is surely for his charity work that he will ultimately be remembered.

Through this one final donation, and the multitude which preceded it, Sir Jimmy will be able to keep on giving something back to local people for many more years to come – and there is surely no more fitting tribute to the man than that.
