The 26-year-old was found at an address in Jubilee Road, Wheatley, with blunt force trauma injuries to his head after a sustained attack. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

Mateusz Halabura, 25, Pawel Wegorzewski, 20, Rafal Palinski, 29, Jaroslaw Owczarczyk, 32 and Sebastian Mariusz Gurski, 30, all from the Doncaster area, were on trial for murder at Sheffield Crown Court but after two weeks guilty pleas for manslaughter were entered, which the prosecution have accepted.

Detective Inspector Sean Bird, deputy senior investigating officer, said: “Questions about what happened to Adam that day have not been answered, as none of those accused have offered any explanation prior to admitting their guilt, which will weigh heavy on Adam’s family for the rest of their lives.

“They have spent the past seven months wondering what happened to their son, partner, brother and father.

“I hope the guilty pleas entered offer them some small degree of comfort and that today’s proceedings allow them to begin the painful process of moving forward with their lives.”

Police carried out extensive investigations in the Polish-speaking community. In the months that followed Mr Szurgocinski’s death, 16 people were arrested on suspicion of murder. After further enquiries, police charged Halabura, Wegorzewski, Palinski, Owczarczyk and Gurski with murder. Dariusz Bogusz, 32, also pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. The six were remanded in custody and will be sentenced on May 6.
