Five arrests in Leeds street disorder UPDATED

Police were called to scenes of public disorder in Nowell Mount in the Harehills area of the city just before 4pm on Monday.

Officers were dispatched following a report of criminal damage to a vehicle and a disturbance in the street involving a number of people.

West Yorkshire Police said neighbourhood officers initially attended with more officers called in to assist when the situation escalated.

What appeared to be mobile phone footage of the disturbance, which was shared on social media, showed a number of confrontations involving people and a large group of people standing in the street.

West Yorkshire Police later confirmed that two people – a 56-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man – were arrested at the scene on suspicion of affray.

Both have since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

An 18-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of assault in relation to an earlier incident and remained in custody yesterday.

The force said two other people were arrested at the scene of the disturbance but were later de-arrested as the situation was brought under control.

Chief Inspector Fran Naughton, of Leeds District Police, said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident. We are aware of footage from the scene circulating via social media channels.

“I would urge anyone with such footage or information about the circumstances of this incident to contact the police to assist us in our ongoing enquiries in to this incident.

“Anyone with information is urged to call Leeds District CID via 101.”
