Five-day wait for borough's results

Thousands of those who voted last Thursday in a south London borough have had to wait five days to find out who they had elected.

The final result was declared for Lewisham's Grove Park ward yesterday with Labour gaining one of three Tory seats in a knife-edge finish.

Labour missed a second gain by just two votes.

The borough's council election count started at 4pm on Friday. It was adjourned as dawn came up on Saturday with the outcome at Grove Park still unresolved.

A decision was then made to recount yesterday.

The Lewisham result brings Labour's nationwide local gains to 415 seats – its best performance in such polls since 1996.

The council was one of ten that switched to the party in the capital.
