Five months of sewerage works begin

A MAJOR overhaul of the sewerage network in Hackenthorpe, Sheffield, began yesterday, in a bid to reduce the amount of pollution going into Shire Brook.

Yorkshire Water has begun a “large operation”, scheduled to last for around five months, to renew more than 1,130 meters of its sewerage system in the area.

A spokesman for the company said: “The work follows weeks of investigations, which have involved inserting CCTV cameras into the public sewers and taking photographs to understand the condition of the pipe work.

“Engineering specialists BarhaleWSP will be carrying out the work, which is expected to take around five months to complete.

“Although most of the work will be in local gardens, there will be some improvements required within the highway, particularly around Rainbow Avenue.”

Melissa Reynard, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said the work should “reduce the risk of potential pollution problems nearby.”

She added: “This is quite a large operation and we’d like to ask residents and commuters to take additional care whilst we are in the area.”
