Five receive Military Crosses

A wounded soldier who raced to help stricken comrades during a double bomb blast while under enemy fire was among a group of servicemen and women awarded Military Crosses yesterday.

Colour Sergeant Paul Baines, 35, of 1st Battalion The Coldstream Guards, and other members of the Armed Forces received the gallantry honour from the Queen during a Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony.

Among the recipients was Corporal Sarah Bushbye, from the Royal Army Medical Corps, who disregarded her own safety amid "bullets cutting the air" to treat UK and Afghan comrades after a bomb attack.

CSgt Baines, from Shiphay, Devon, was modest about his actions saying how others with him that day were equally deserving of recognition.

Speaking after the ceremony he said: "I know it's a clich but it's our job and we get trained to do it. Part of it's adrenalin, part of it's your job, part of it's the fact you don't want to let your friends down."
