Flags flown as Home Secretary urged to reach Orgreave decision

The flags are part of the Orgreave Truth and Justice’s Campaign’s effort to persuade Home Secretary Theresa May to launch an inquiry into events at the Orgreave coking plant during the Miners’ Strike of 1984 and in particular the actions of South Yorkshire Police.

The campaign submitted its case for such an inquiry in December last year, but the Home Secretary has yet to respond.

Fresh impetus has been given to the campaign following the findings of the inquests into the deaths of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster and the criticism of South Yorkshire Police.

The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign (OTJC) chairman, Joe Rollin, said: “In recent weeks the demand for the Government to set up an inquiry has become immense.

“People from all over the country – and some from other parts of the world - are telling us they have written to Home Secretary Theresa May urging her to speed up the decision she promised when we made our legal submission to her six months ago.

“After Hillsborough, the demand for accountability of those to whom we entrust the responsibility for ensuring law and order in our communities has become unanswerable.”

He added: “Justice yet further delayed is justice denied.”

Wakefield Council has already agreed to fly the flag and the OTJC has approached councils in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire to do the same.

An anniversary rally will be held on Saturday.
