Flood-hit valley businesses given another helping hand by council

ANOTHER £50,000 has been made available to help businesses recovering from floods in West Yorkshire’s Calder valley.

More than 200 businesses were affected by the summer floods in and around Hebden Bridge.

Councillors have agreed to make a further £50,000 available to help firms to get back on their feet.

Members of Calderdale Council’s Cabinet agreed this week to make the £50,000 available from its Economic Fighting Fund.

The money is in addition to the £200,000 already made available through the council’s Recovery Investment for a Stronger Economy fund to businesses in the Calder valley to assist them following the flooding.

So far council officials have visited or contacted well over 200 businesses affected by the floods and the authority has allocated money to 116 businesses.

The businesses have received funding to help them to get trading again and half of them have used the money to install flood defence barriers and improve flood-resilience.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet member for the economy and environment, Councillor Barry Collins, says the council is doing all it can to help local businesses in their hour of need.

“The communities of Calder valley are normally vibrant places with thriving local businesses and we are doing all we can to help them recover from the floods,” he said.

Traders have complained about falling visitor numbers.
