Flood worries over housing site

HUNDREDS more houses could be built on a greenfield site at Driffield which local people say is prone to flooding.

Members of East Riding Council's planning committee will be asked on Thursday to approve the principle of developing the 10-acre site next to Fieldfare housing estate, opposite Alfred Bean Hospital, on Bridlington Road.

Residents are concerned about building on land which is known to be very wet and believe there are better sites for development in the town. Objectors have also raised the question of impact on the wildlife but planners say existing tree belts will be retained. Town mayor Steve Poessl said: "We do believe there's a flood risk there. We know for a fact there's springs on the land."

Planners say the land is earmarked for housing and it will not have an "undue" impact on neighbours, nature or nearby roads.
