Flowers for teenagers who died in horrific smash

Grieving young people laid flowers yesterday at the scene of a crash which claimed the lives of three teenagers.

Two of the teenagers who died in a Vauxhall Corsa which crashed into a Volkswagen Golf on Adwick Road, Mexborough, on Monday night, were named as the driver Jonathan Scott, 17, from Conisbrough and 17-year-old front-seat passenger Robert Ryan Tepper from Mexborough. A 16-year-old girl, who was travelling in the back seat of the car, also died.

Meanwhile another passenger, a 16-year-old girl from Mexborough, is in a critical condition in hospital, with multiple fractures and internal injuries.

The Corsa was behind a Vauxhall Astra, which overtook a Fiat Punto, as they travelled out of Mexborough towards Adwick upon Dearne.

But as the Corsa also went to overtake, it lost control, ending up sideways on to an oncoming Volkswagen Golf.

The driver of the Golf, a 56-year-old from London, has been discharged from hospital.

Both the 19-year-old Punto driver, from Swinton, and the 18-year-old Astra driver from Mexborough were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They have been bailed pending further inquries.

The officer leading the investigation, Insp Simon Slack said it was a "horrible" scene, with "lots of debris and devastation".

He said the Astra and the Corsa were travelling together, but he did not know about the Punto.

The inspector appealed for witnesses to come forward.
