Focus on change as photographer makes return

A PHOTOGRAPHER who toured Yorkshire four decades ago as part of an artistic odyssey around Britain has revisited the sites to see how the region has changed.

Simon English took photographs around Sheffield, Rotherham, Richmond, Harrogate, Doncaster, Barnsley, Wakefield, Leeds and Bradford for his project in 1971.

The resulting work was called All England Sculpture, and involved him placing St George's flags across locations on the map so they spelled England if viewed from above.

Earlier this year, Mr English decided he wanted to retrace his steps as part of a new project, called England Revisited, which will allow him to document the passing of 40 years.

Visiting Sheffield, the artist said: "I am very excited about being back in Yorkshire to see how the places I visited in 1971 have changed since then.

"I have very fond memories of the time I spent here 40 years ago and the people that I met, and am looking forward to reliving that experience."

Mr English is working his way north from Sheffield but while in the city he visited the spot on Queens Road where he stood and took several photographs in 1971.

One side of the road has hardly changed, while the other, which used to be a yard owned by timber company Arnold Laver, is now a huge retail park which includes a B&Q warehouse.
