Folk singer getting ready to present childhood songs

YORKSHIRE folk singer Kate Rusby will present a concert for Christmas featuring carols and songs learned through her childhood.

Kate Rusby at Christmas, on December 9 at Leeds Town Hall, is among programme of entertainment through autumn and winter at the Victorian venue.

Highlights from the What’s On guide include Mercury-nominated Tyneside band The Unthanks who have teamed up with Brighouse & Rastrick Brass Band for a concert next Thursday, September 15.

The collaboration with the brass champions will focus on the folk songbook of the coal mining industry. The Unthanks will sing material from their past and current repertoire, with some material specially written for the brass project.

The Leeds International Orchestral Season opens in October with a top-class series of leading orchestras and soloists from around the world, including the Moscow Philharmonic on October 8, the Trondheim Soloists on October 29 and the Warsaw Philharmonic on November 19.

Another musical highlight is John Wilson and the John Wilson Orchestra for a show celebrating the golden era of Hollywood film musicals. Hooray for Hollywood is on November 30.
