Folklore coming to hall in quest for permanent home

THE air will be thick with talk of myth, legend and folk tradition at Newby Hall later this month as it hosts an exhibition of the Museum of British Folklore.

The museum is the culmination of founder Simon Costin’s lifelong passion for folklore and a long-term project which aims to establish the UK’s first ever centre devoted to celebrating and researching our rich cultural heritage.

The collection is currently in storage while the project looks for a home and a small mobile collection, housed in a colourful caravan, gives a flavour of things to come.

On Saturday June 18, Medusa Gothic Morris Dancers will perform and on Sunday afternoon, there will be a hog roast and a modern English ceilidh band playing from 1pm to 4pm.

Both afternoons will be rounded off with talks from Mr Costin – an art director and set designer who collaborated extensively with the late Alexander McQueen.

He has also worked with many of the world’s leading fashion photographers and his work has been displayed in many exhibitions, at venues as diverse as a forest in Argyll and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Newby Hall, an historic mansion, is one of the country’s most respected stately homes and is situated near Ripon.
