Footballer in court over assault in bar

A CHAMPIONSHIP striker appeared in court yesterday over an attack at a nightclub.

Sheffield Wednesday player Gary Madine is charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on a man at Paris Bar in Sheffield city centre, in the early hours of Sunday, February 5 this year.

Madine, 19, of Middlewood Rise, Middlewood, Sheffield, did not enter a plea during the Sheffield Crown Court hearing.

His barrister Jim Baird asked for the case to be moved.

He said: “Given the nature of the defendant’s employment and that he is a high-profile football player , he would not necessarily get a fair trial in Sheffield.”

Judge Alan Goldsack ordered the application to move the case be sent by Tuesday next week.

Madine has been bailed.
