Footballers benefit from cash boost

FOOTBALLERS in Poppleton, near York, are celebrating following a £375,000 funding boost for sport in the area.

The Football Foundation has contributed 225,000 to Poppleton Tigers JFC so they can develop and modernise their changing rooms.

Another 150,000 has come from the FA.

The double boost will allow the Tigers, Poppleton Girls and Poppleton Ladies to build a new four changing room clubhouse, with meeting and training facilities, as well as officials' changing rooms, a kitchen and toilets.

The improvements should benefit more than 300 players and more than 20 teams who regularly play at the Millfield Lane grounds at Nether Poppleton.

Club secretary Val Duggan said: "Poppleton JFC are delighted to receive this grant from the Football Foundation.

"It has taken a lot of hard work over the past two years to reach this position."

York Council's football facilities project officer, Gary Limbert, said: "Poppleton Tigers JFC have put in a tremendous amount of effort in securing both Football Foundation and other match-funding.

"The new clubhouse and changing facilities will undoubtedly ensure the continued success of the club, and will offer a new resource for the benefit of the whole community.

"York's football facilities development plan is now complete and I would encourage clubs to come forward and develop their projects, Poppleton Tigers are a good example of what can be achieved."
