Force ranks highly in tackling violent thugs

HUMBERSIDE Police has been ranked as one of the best-performing forces in the country for tackling violent crime, according to latest figures.

Statistics produced by the Association of Chief Police Officers show a significant fall in the number of violent crimes resulting in injury this summer when compared with same period last year.

In June, the force saw a 20 per cent fall in recorded violent crime – making it one of the top five UK forces – with July and August both seeing 18 per cent reductions.

The category includes the most serious violence as well as assaults causing less injury.

In total, there were 2,017 recorded incidents between June 1 and August 31 this year, a fall of nearly 500 on the 2,516 recorded over the same period in 2009.

Assistant Chief Constable Alan Leaver said: "These figures are positive and demonstrate that Humberside Police is taking real steps to tackle violent crime in order to make the communities we serve safer places.

"The fall in rates of violent crime can be attributed to many factors including a range of initiatives that have been introduced across the force to tackle alcohol related crime in the town and city centres.

"Of course, the matter of violent crime is one that needs constant attention and we must continue to work hard to ensure the number of incidents keeps on falling."

Divisional breakdowns of the figures were not available.

However, last week the force was able to announce a massive reduction in town centre violence in A Division, which covers North East Lincolnshire.

Assaults fell by more than a half in Grimsby town centre over the last 12 months, and in Cleethorpes by more than 42 per cent over the same period.

The force said it had been working with licensees and the local council to combat the problem.
