Forest tour nears landmark as Will Young announces gig

A LANDMARK will be reached next summer when the millionth concert-goer attends a nationwide tour of England’s forests after Will Young has been named as the latest act to play the open-air gigs.

The singer is the latest big name to sign up for the Forestry Commission’s hugely successful music events, which will take in seven woodland venues including Dalby Forest, near Pickering.

Mr Young, who found fame after winning the reality show Pop Idol in 2002, will appear at the North Yorkshire forest on June 29. It was announced last week that Brit Award winner Plan B will play at Dalby Forest on June 30.

The nationwide forest tours began in 2001 when Jools Holland and The Levellers both played in Dalby Forest over the initial weekend. Organisers revealed yesterday that next summer will see the millionth gig-goer attend one of the live dates nationally. Profits from the tours are used to help conserve forests.

The Forestry Commission’s events manager, Rachael Miller, said: “Over the years, the open air concert tours have been a huge success and it’s great to think so many people have enjoyed the gigs.”

Tickets for Mr Young’s gig are priced at £35 and go on sale at 9am on Friday from the box office on 03000 680400 or online at www.forestry.gov.uk/music.
