Forestry chiefs seek volunteer recruits for trail maintenance

A RECRUITMENT drive has been launched to sign up volunteers to help maintain an internationally-renowned mountain biking network in one of England’s largest forests.

Forestry Commission chiefs have teamed up with Singletraction – a Yorkshire-based independent voluntary biking organisation – to re-establish a trail building group in the 8,600-acre Dalby Forest, near Pickering.

An open meeting will be held on February 19 to set out plans for the future of the acclaimed 36-mile off-road network.

The Forestry Commission’s bike ranger Stuart Startup said: “Over the years bikers have played a massive part in creating mountain routes in Dalby, building trail sections, advising on design and helping run events.

“We want to re-invigorate the grassroots by getting more people to sign up with Singletraction to claim a stake in Dalby’s development.”

The forest attracts more than 100,000 bikers annually and for the past two years it has been venue for the UCI World Cup Cross Country Mountain Bike Championship.

Trail-building days will be held on the third Sunday of every month.

The open event will be held in the courtyard area of Low Dalby from 10am until 1pm.
