‘Forgotten spaces’ ideas make shortlist

AN URBAN beach, a Steel City version of the “Hollywood” sign and a golden frame to float down canals are among the ideas shortlisted in Sheffield’s “Forgotten Spaces” architectural competition.

The shortlist of 19 ideas, chosen from 60 entries, show a range of ways to make over the city’s under-used and unloved spaces.

David Bickle, chairman of the judging panel, said: “There is so much creativity and innovation coming out of Sheffield and it was a real privilege to judge some really novel, striking and, at times, completely bonkers ideas.”

An exhibition of the shortlisted designs will be staged at The Crucible Theatre and the three winning entries will be announced at a ceremony in September.

Although the winning proposals are unlikely to ever become reality, it is hoped the ideas generated will stimulate regeneration.
