Former college to be demolished

A FORMER college building in Keighley is to be knocked down in the hope of attracting a new employer to the site.

Contractors have begun work on behalf of Bradford Council to prepare the Harold Town building in Chesham Street for demolition next month.

The building has been vacant since November 2010 after former occupier Leeds City College relocated to its new Keighley Campus in Bradford Road.

Coun David Green, Bradford Council’s executive member for regeneration and the economy, said: “The Harold Town building needed a lot of repair work carrying out.

“By demolishing it we are creating a ‘blank canvas’ redevelopment opportunity in Keighley as well as removing the costs of keeping the building secure and safe.

“We are continuing to market the site with a view to attracting a business to support the local economy through the creation of extra jobs.”

The demolition of the Harold Town building is being carried out by Gill Demolitions, based in Bradford, and work on the site is expected to be completed early next year.
