Former England rugby captain hoping to inspire next generation

The former England captain, who was an integral part of the Grand Slam-winning side of 2003 and the only player to feature in every minute of the World Cup-winning campaign that year, is speaking to pupils at Humberston Academy before giving three hours of coaching.

He will then head to Edward Heneage Primary Academy in Grimsby this afternoon to complete two days of visits to schools in the area run by the David Ross Education Trust.

Shane Ward, sports enrichment officer at the trust, said: “Somebody of his fame can only help to inspire students, which is a key part of what we are trying to do in academies across the trust.

“We hope that events like this one will encourage more young people to get involved in sport because not only does it improve fitness, it develops important skills like teamwork, communication, and love of the outdoors.”

Mr Dallaglio, a former pupil of Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire, hosted similar events at Havelock Academy in Grimsby yesterday.

Havelock PE teacher Craig Suddaby said he hoped the star’s visit would build on an increase in interest in rugby at the school.

He said: “Rugby has really taken off over the last five years here – we started training with two or three and now we have a full squad playing regular matches.

“Something like this could increase participation further and, in turn, increase the quality of rugby over time.”
