Former MI5 chief joins Dennis the Menace for resort's literary festival

Dame Stella Rimington and Dennis the Menace are among the highlights of Scarborough Literature Festival next month.

It is the fourth year the town has hosted the event, organised by Scarborough Library, which runs from April 15-18, and this year will be targeted as much at children as adults.

This year's Friday night headliner is Dame Stella, the former MI5 chief turned writer who has been a fierce critic of the Government.

But for the young at heart the festival is also offering the story of the Beano, taking an affectionate look at the history of the comic and characters such as Dennis the Menace and Gnasher.

Saturday night features thriller writer Robert Goddard, the Hampshire-based author.

Also appearing over the weekend are oral storyteller Ben Haggarty, retelling Frankenstein, Craig "That Poetry Bloke" Bradley, Tim Bowler, Rebbecca Ray, Matt Whyman, Kathy Seabrook, and Manga artist Katy Coope.

"Whether it's murder and intrigue, natural history, biography, drama, poetry or the Beano which appeals there should be something for everyone," a spokesman said.

Tickets are available though the Tourist Information Centre in the Brunswick Centre by calling 01723 372075.
