Foundation awards £54,000 to charities supporting disadvantaged people

TWO charities in South Yorkshire have been awarded grants totalling £54,000 by the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales.

Home-Start Doncaster has been awarded a grant of £29,000, over two years, for the salary of a co-ordinator, while Rotherham-based charity the Tassibee Project has been awarded £25,000 for the salary of a project manager.

Home-Start Doncaster provides support for families with young children by training volunteers and offering home visits, including healthy eating workshops and guidance on benefit entitlements.

The new grant will help fund an existing role allowing the charity to continue to visit families and provide support on life skills and budgeting.

The Tassibee Project provides support and activities to women and their families from black and minority ethnic communities in Rotherham, who are living in disadvantaged areas and affected by issues including isolation, domestic abuse and hectic lifestyles.

Khalida Luqman, project manager at the Tassibee Project, said: “Many of the women that use our services need educational and family support to improve their lives.

“We provide workshops and advice to help build their self-esteem and become more independent.”

Pat Greenwood, the foundation’s grant manager for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “The foundation is proud to fund charities that are helping disadvantaged people to play a fuller role in their communities.

“As a grant maker, we are committed to providing core funding to ensure charities can continue to deliver their vital work.”

The foundation is one of the UK’s leading independent grant makers providing funding to local, regional and national charities.

Last year, 94 grants totalling £2.2m were awarded to charities in Yorkshire and the Humber, with more than 75 per cent going towards core costs.

Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than £300m in grants to 42,000 charities across all local authority areas in England and Wales through its flagship community programme.

Regional charities with an income of up to £1m and national charities with an income of up to £5m can apply to the community programme to help support their work with disadvantaged people and communities, the foundation said.
