Four firearms seized as police squad swoops

FIREARMS including a high-powered rifle were seized by police during a series of co-ordinated raids in Sheffield.

Officers found four weapons and ammunition during swoops on homes in Norfolk Park, Park Hill, Shiregreen and Southey Green, including a specialist Enfield rifle, a semi-automatic handgun, a sawn-off shotgun and a .410 shotgun.

Detectives say they fear the weapons may have been used on Sheffield’s streets had they not been discovered.

The guns were seized by South Yorkshire Police’s Threat, Risk and Harm team, which specialises in tackling organised crime.

Detective Inspector Bob Chapman said: “The team was set up to investigate organised crime and gang-related activity.

“Its remit is to disrupt organised crime and gangs by acting quickly on intelligence received.”

Arrests have been made in relation to the firearms that were discovered, and suspects have been bailed pending further enquiries.
