Rush hour on the M62 was even more unpleasant than usual for many drivers but the traffic chaos won’t spoil the day for Yorkshire’s most famous Wookie...
Here are four things you need to know so far today...
The M62 was a no-go zone
A lorry fire closed the M62 in both directions between its junction with the M1 at Lofthouse and Junction 30 at Rothwell, causing severe delays at the height of rush-hour.
Thousands of commuters were stranded for over an hour as West Yorkshire Fire Service extinguished the blaze and crews carried out emergency road repairs after removing the burned-out vehicle.
Christmas isn’t Christmas without Kate
Kate Rusby, aka the Barnsley Nightingale, is back on tour promoting her new album of traditional Christmas carols and this time the Mercury prize-nominated folk singer has sought inspiration from both Yorkshire and Cornwall.
Rusby will be performing songs from the new album, “The Frost Is all Over’ at Leeds Town Hall tonight and York Barbican tomorrow.
Leeds sex attacker jailed for 14 years
A Leeds rapist who subjected a woman in her 50s to a horrific sex attack has been jailed for 14 years after his girlfriend called police in response to an appeal on Facebook.
Mark Wilkinson, 28, who has a string of convictions for burglary, theft and drug possession, will serve at least nine years before being considered for parole.
Chewbacca is a Yorkshireman (well, almost)
When the UK premiere of the latest Star Wars film, The Force Awakens takes place tonight, Keighley resident Peter Mayhew will command lots of attention on the red carpet, and not just because he’s 7ft 3in tall.
Mayhew is better known as Chewbacca, the hairy Wookie and sidekick of Harrison Ford’s character Hans Solo. And he’s not the only movie star from God’s own country, as we reveal.
