Free courses to promote better diet

THE latest bid to improve diets in South Yorkshire will see the launch of a series of five-week courses in Barnsley in the new year.

Barnsley Council’s Adult and Family Learning Service are offering the new cook and eat courses, which are free and include all ingredients, from the second week of January.

The move follows the success of Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food shop in Rotherham, which has seen more than 7,500 people take part in cookery classes since it was launched three years ago.

The shop in Rotherham town centre was established as part of the Ministry of Food TV series and is now run as a not-for-profit enterprise, with support from both the local council and the NHS.

The courses in Barnsley will be on Mondays between 10am and 12.20pm at the Royston Lifelong Learning Centre starting on January 9, and Wednesdays between 1pm and 3.30pm at the Kendray Resource Centre, starting on January 11. The course will also run on Fridays between 1pm and 3.30pm at the Athersley Roundhouse Lifelong Learning Centre, beginning on January 13.

For more information or to book onto one of the courses, call the Eldon Centre on 01226 775281.
